The WHY behind the new paint color not flowing with the existing other colors in the home!

In my 35 year professional experience I have found that color, primarily, can only be described in three ways:

  1. Light or Dark

  2. Bright or Muted (neutral)

  3. Cool or Warm

That’s it!

And, it’s the “Bright or Muted” description that causes the biggest “pain point” in a space when trying to use both together. IMHO it just doesn’t work which is exactly what I also tell my clients during their Color Consultation.

Here, an example, is a “bright” color for a living room.

Recently a client told me that she was in a paint store, trying to choose a paint color on her own for only one room in her home, the living room. She was talking to the in-store color consultant about painting a new bright clean color (in the living room), with the muted or neutral colors presently existing in the entry hall, and other rooms in the home which can be seen from the living room. The consultant told her, “You can use both bright and muted colors; I do it all the time!”

So after trying a few new clean colors on the living room walls, at the advice of the store color consultant, she became frustrated and exhausted because they just did not look great with the other muted colors. Boom!  I arrived at the scene to solve her problem when before I even began to speak she told me what the in store color consultant had told her.... My response was, “You may do as you wish after I leave your home, but at least you will have the right muted neutral color that must harmonize with the existing colors in the home. And that my friend is “WHY” the brighter colors did NOT look great!”  Likewise had she used one of the bright colors (that the color consultant gave her)  it would have looked as if she had forgotten to paint the living room!

Here, an example of a “muted/neutral” color for a foyer.

There are not that many hard and fast rules in color and design but there are guidelines. Once you know the guidelines, you can use your gut instinct and be creative, but not knowing them could be trouble! Even seasoned professionals may have a hard time determining what is wrong with a color in a space in order to correct it!

The biggest challenge people have with color in their home is in creating flow and usually if a color consultant is not hired to pick colors which flow, many end up by defaulting to using a very pale color.

Just think of the time, effort and money you’ll save by hiring a true color expert
