A Case For The Drape
As a designer I know how important drapery can be in a room.
And as a consumer I know how important it is to get the best value for my dollar
when I make a purchase for my home. So when a new client calls for drapery and
says she has been living without them, for the past 7 years I was surprised.
After all, you can’t miss what you’ve never had, right? Well not in this case.
She clearly knew that her space looked sparse, cold and unfinished and needed
drapery. Perfect timing for her as we were having a “Drapery Sale” and she
wanted in on the savings. Smart girl!

After the initial phone conversation and some photos she
sent by email, I was able to define her style and the room’s color palette so
that I could choose fabrics for the drapery project. She also mentioned that
there were existing drapery rods above the windows that once held draperies
from the previous home owners and that she would like to keep them. And making
the project even more interesting, she mentioned that she wanted orange
draperies! I paused and asked her why and she said “because I have orange
accessories in the room”. Now I’m really interested!

Arriving at her home with several fabric books, I find a beautiful
living and dining room! Lovely neutral carpeting, exquisite custom painted
walls, wonderful original wall art, handsome furniture and last but not least,
several unadorned windows with wooden drapery hardware placed above them and no
draperies! All that was needed to make this space come alive were the draperies!

After looking over several fabrics in the room, I convinced
her that “orange” might not be the best choice for drapery panels but that a
deep, earthy, flax color, with just a bit of orange embroidery, would be best
and give the room some dimension, warmth, and texture. She trusted me and
agreed! The finished project speaks for itself and my client wrote this;
“Toni I absolutely love the drapery! You said it all, it finishes the
room! I didn't realize how stark naked it looked until I came home last night
and I thought, YES it’s finished, Perfect! The result was absolutely fantastic and provided
the finishing touch to our living and dining room. Thank you Toni for all
your help”!
If you have a room or rooms in your home that look “almost”
there but just “not quite”, maybe it’s draperies that you are missing. Trust me when I say, “let me make a case for the
drape”!
