What do lipstick and house paint have in common?

Exterior House Paint lipstick & house paint

I’m in love with this idea of graphics to make a statement. What a splash of humor and interest.

Having worked in Cosmetics decades ago and practicing Interior Design and Decorating for over 30 years I did not know what these 2 industries have in common….but I know now!

Apparently makeup and paint are two industries that are considered just about recession proof. In other words they don’t die when people stop spending money.

Exterior House Paint Mid-Century Modern

A beautiful melon color on a mid-century modern home! Garage door, roof, downspouts and trim are in a coco color which outlines the homes clean straight structured shapes.

Did you know that when consumers pull back on their spending (i.e. during a recession), there are two things they don’t stop buying. Lipstick and house paint! In a recession, people are spending more time at home but they still want to do renovations. Painting is often one of the cheapest renovations.

So, if the homeowner decides they can't afford to build or renovate during uncertain times, paint does the same thing for your house as lipstick does for your face.

Not that we all need pink front doors on our homes but this was just too good an example of pink lipstick and a homes front door in a color named

“HOT LIPS”!

It was first revealed by Juliet Schor in her 1998 book The Overspent American and reinforced by Estee Lauder chairman Leonard Lauder who used the term to explain the rise in cosmetic sales after the September 11th attacks. The basic idea is that during troubled economic times, consumers choose to indulge in purchases that “provide an emotional uplift without breaking the budget.” (Forbes, June 1, 2022) Take a look at what Wikipedia describes as the Lipstick Index…

What a beauty!

Most ladies know that even if all you have is lipstick, it will often do more to brighten up your face than any other cosmetic. Paint does the same thing for your home. It’s an excellent way to brighten up a space or indulge in a colorful trend.
